I Must Confess…my neglected bedroom

Post in collaboration with Super Amart

I must confess that we are nearing the 2 year anniversary of moving into our new house. Which is not so new now but I still refer to as our new place. Must remember to change that…

I can’t believe that time has passed so quickly. It seems like yesterday when I blogged about moving in and all the weird and wonderful items I found in our new garden.

When we first moved in we made the kids’ rooms our priority – somehow we were able to paint three feature walls in one day (and assemble some much needed flatpak furniture as well) so the kids could be completely set up in their new rooms with little fuss.

Nathan also spent a lot of time getting his shed/man cave organised and in the years since we’ve even spent some time and energy in updating the living areas – in fact our downstairs rumpus has just received a much longed for mini makeover (a whole other post will be needed for that transformation!)

But throughout that time, one room has remained neglected, unchanged and unloved – our bedroom.

Before - my neglected bedroom www.myhometruths.com

Less boudoir, more storage hell, our poor bedroom hasn’t changed since we first moved in. All that has changed is the varying levels of mess on and around our bed. I’ve been wanting to jazz it up and make it more of a sanctuary for a while now but other priorities kept getting in the way.

Plus, I must confess, I had no idea what I wanted to do anyway. I’m not a natural stylist and I could never really identify the look that I wanted.

Step in Super Amart who offered me a $200 voucher to make over our bedroom. I must confess I could not reply ‘yes’ fast enough! Our room was finally going to get some love thanks to the kick in the butt I needed to get moving. Because of course it was never going to happen while I waited, in vain, for inspiration to strike…

After perusing their website, I was left daunted and confused by the many choices. Did I want to update our bed and mattress? Did I want to add in some updated bedroom furniture? Did I want to add a print to the wall or concentrate on some updated manchester instead?

After contemplating the many options for making over our room, I decided to get more bang for my buck and update our manchester. I was very interested in this set:

Before I settled on this absolutely beautiful Logan and Mason “Mossman” quilt cover set. I decided to try for an elegant theme in our room and this quilt cover set ended up giving the room a definite sense of class and style.

We are still using sheets and quilt covers that, in some cases, are more than 10 years old. I figured getting a gorgeous quilt cover set would instantly jazz up the room and provide the inspiration I needed to undertake a mini-makeover. Do you think it worked?

For the first time ever I also bought a set of cushions to adorn the bed. Now, it was only the other week that I had to smirk when a meme did the rounds taking the piss out of people who pile on cushions in the morning only to have them tossed off without a thought each night (I’ve searched for it everywhere but couldn’t find it to link here).  It appears I am now to be one of them…

I was very pleased to see how far my $200 went in the end. One quality quilt cover set and 4 cushions later and I finally had the skeleton of a complete room makeover.

Add in a few other accessories (and a long overdue clean out!) and I finally had a boudoir to be proud of. Maybe I do have a hidden stylist in me after all…

I must say I was impressed with the service provided by Super Amart. I completed my online order at 11pm Friday night and got a call from my local store at 9.30am the next morning to say my order was ready for pickup. They can also deliver to your home if you don’t have a store close by.

They don’t just do bedrooms either – Mum and I went into our local store (I wanted to get a feel for the products before I ordered) and we tried out pretty much every single one of their recliners. They also sell outdoor furniture, dining tables, lounges and accessories like cushions, lamps, vases and prints to complete your look.

I’m really happy with how my room came together in the end. Now I just have to keep it clean and tidy (a huge ask) and promise to never neglect it again!

  1. Looks fantastic. I wish someone would throw a voucher my way for a room makeover, it might just entice me to finally do something about our bedroom as well. It’s starting to look really dated.

It’s sad that it took a voucher to finally get me moving on our room too. But I’m proud to say that I have been keeping it clean and it’s still looking today and well-loved. Unlike before!

  2. What a transformation – looks great! I’ll get my act together for the rules to live by….promise!

I’m really surprised at how well it all turned out given my complete numptiness as a designer. Maybe all those years of watching The Block and House Rules have finally led to something useful?

  3. Oh your bedroom looks lovely! We’ve just moved house so it’s not looking too shabby at the moment. Time will tell though!

I really want to do a bedroom makeover, but as we only moved in 9 months ago, I can’t justify it! But I love scrolling through all the amazing bedroom styling on Instagram and Pinterest..mine may never look like them but I can dream!

I won’t show you a picture of the kids’ rooms right now – OMG some work needs to happen in those rooms stat. There is always some other place in the house to take care of…it never ends!

It looks fantastic, Kirsty. I love my bed but it certainly do with a makeover. I don’t really get all the tiny cushions, though. Sure they look pretty, but it’s all a bit fiddly for me. I want something low maintenance. Mr 11 has a collection of pillow pets and half the battle of making his bed is dealing with all of them! We keep it classy around here. Enjoy your made over room. xo

The cushions haven’t been too much of a drama so far but it’s early days – I’m sure I’ll slip soon (I’m not naturally organised!)

  7. I love love cushions and think your choice was perfect. Sleep right now in new bedroom

  9. Love what you’ve done with your bedroom. I’ve seen a few bloggers work with Super Amart now, keep crossing my fingers and hoping they’ll come to me next! Mind you I’ve probably shot myself in the foot by running my Ikea Shelf Style series … ho hum.

    • Forgot to say, I love your bedroom furniture. I have been thinking about attacking our (dark) suite with some Annie Sloan chalk paint but don’t know if I’m quite game …

I’m not sure how Super Amart found me but they got me at the right time. Although I’m now relieved that my sponsored/reviews/giveaway posts are pretty much out of the way. I agreed to most of them prior to Dad falling really ill and then passing away and then they were delayed so I felt obliged to get through them as soon as I could after I was back on deck. Looking forward to blogging normally for a while now!

Re your furniture – not sure I’d be game enough to print mine up either but what have you got to lose????

  10. OMG you should see my bedroom. I can’t believe the dumping ground it has become. I hide everything in there because we have no storage. Your effort is inspiring. I love it. Well done you! Mel xx

Oh what a difference! There’s a standing joke in our house that I’ve substantially reduced the squarage through all the paint layers over the years.

    • Kirsty says:

Hahaha! I recently discovered that the main wall in the rumpus was once painted a bright orange – so pleased it is no longer that electrifying hue!

  13. Suzy Mac says:

This is gorgeous How I love a makeover! any make-over! and I know what you mean about the cushions but seeing this I’m sorely tempted. Maybe one of those end of bed thingies to put them in… hmm

    • Kirsty says:

You know, the cushions haven’t been that much of a pain. There’s only 5 so they don’t take long to put on or pull off. I just place them against the wall next to our laundry basket so they are out of the way when they are not on the bed. You should totally do it!!!!

  14. Your neglected bedroom puts mine to shame let alone your new done up one lol. I really need to give all the rooms in my house some love! Maybe Super Amart can hook me up too.

  15. I absolutely understand that the first thing that you wanted to fix when you moved in, were the rooms of the kids. The same here! When we moved in our new house we started with making it nice and cozy for the kids. I really love the way you freshen up your bedroom! It looks beautiful! I need to thing of some inexpensive and simple way to make our bedroom more pleasant! Thanks for sharing! I love your writing style! Greets!

    • Kirsty says:

Thanks for your lovely comment Kellye! I hope you can find a way too freshen up your room too – us parents deserve a space of our own to relax in!
