Musical Musings A to Z: songs beginning with T
T for tumultuous. That pretty much sums up the last few weeks in the political world with leadership speculation and ongoing unrest in the government. And it looks as if there really is no end in sight for the Government who seem to dig a bigger whole for themselves each and every day.
Tumultuous also sums up our last few weeks here at home with the return to school, the resumption of routines and the start of all the extra curricular activities that goes with that. It’s been busy and trying and stressful as we find our ‘normal’ for the year.
It’s been particularly tough at times this week, especially for Gilbert. He has been struggling with everything – it’s the stress and anxiety of returning to routine. It’s been really hard for me to see him crying at the school gate or upset because he can’t get to sleep at night because his brain just won’t stop. I hate seeing him at such a loss.
I know it will get better – this is how it rolls at the beginning of every year (and the beginning of most other terms as well). But that does not make it any easier to watch as your eldest child battles to recover some sort of equilibrium whenever there is a break in routine.
To aim for a little distraction, for this week’s musical musings I’ve included two songs that have a retro vibe, fantastic videos and a hypnotic rhythm that will quite literally make you want to dance – whether you want to or not!
Toxic – Britney Spears
I’m not a huge Britney fan – most of her songs are over-manufactured and very formulaic. But this track stands out with the retro strings and the staccato beat that makes this something more than her usual fare. The bass line is also extremely funky – just the way I like it!
Tightrope – Janelle Monae
I’m a bit late to the party as I’ve only just discovered this song listening to the RnB/Soul channel on iTunes radio. This hits all the bases for me. Retro vibe, lots of funk, driving bass line, strings, danceable beat, judicious use of brass – it’s SO good. I’ve been playing this on high rotation and there’s no signs of me being sick of it yet!
