Musical Musings A to Z: songs beginning with S

S for summer. S for sun. S for school…

Around Australia all these words are combining as we reach the end of the summer holidays and get ready to return to school for Term 1. The kids are high on a combination of nervous excitement, together with a dash of end-of-holiday blues.

I have to admit I’m also feeling a little bit of trepidation with the imminent “start” to my working year. Up to now I’ve been able to take it slow with the kids at home with me. But from Monday when everyone is back on deck, there are no more excuses!

It’s fitting in a way that we come to the letter S today in my musical musings quest through the alphabet. If you have missed how I’ve got here, feel free to check out my previous musical musings.

Today I’m excited to feature two of my all time favourite groups – Simply Red and the Brand New Heavies.

Stars – Simply Red

I remember receiving the Stars CD as my first Simply Red release. The title track hooked me and I never looked back. The piano riff, the bass line and Mick Hucknall’s vocals that start off low but end up soaring in the chorus – they are definitely the highlights of this song for me.

Spend Some Time – Brand New Heavies

This is one of my faves from BNH – it’s poppy, funky and fun. It combines all my favourite musical elements – strings, piano, minor chords, funking bass, danceable rhythm and sing-along vocals. Such an awesome S track – perfect for summer, school and sun…

So you know how this goes – what’s your favourite songs beginning with S?
