I Must Confess…I’m No Foodie

Bonjour! Guten Tag! Ciao!

After the excitement of Eurovision over the weekend I’m feeling a little European today and ready for anything.

Anything, except for exotic food.

I must confess I am not an adventurous eater. The most adventurous thing I have ever tried is a seafood topper for my chicken schnitzel.

Yep, I’m a schnitty girl. Or I was before I was denied the joys of gluten. Classy.

I have never tried snails, witchetty grubs, frog’s legs or even oysters. I’ll have the odd steak, bit of lamb and on occasion pork, but my staple is chicken, especially when dining out.

It seems I’m too chicken to order anything outside my comfort zone – geddit?

I would be next to useless on The Amazing Race or Survivor or any other reality challenge that required contestants to eat offal or bugs or anything that doesn’t look like chicken. No way would any of that stuff come near my mouth.

Ditto for Masterchef or My Kitchen Rules – I would struggle to eat some of the more exotic dishes that are served up on those shows, especially the meat cooked rare or the seafood marinaded in acidic juices.

BTW – a friendly warning if you happen to google images of “weird food” – the images are truly disturbing.

So, after my less than overwhelming confession I’m hoping some of you have more interesting confessions to share. Have you tried something exotic? Done something crazy? Made a tool of yourself?

Share, share share. And make sure you take the time to comment and join in with the pretty damn awesome I Must Confess community!

  1. In Cambodia they eat spiders – we didn’t see them to try them (but I’d already decided I wouldn’t -they weren’t the little once, they were big with a bulb full of poison (goo) that oozed everywhere if you took a bite out of it.

  2. Oysters are amazing, you’re missing out! I’ve eaten witchetty grubs, but only cos we learnt about them at primary school one day so I went home and dug some up to see what they tasted like lol. I’d never go on survivor or the like, no way I could eat those eggs that had dead baby birds in them still… YUK!

I’m super impressed that you went home and dug up your own witchetty grubs – that’s true dedication Toni!

  3. I have no idea if my scheduled post for today will go live or not, so I’ve linked up my blog home landing page. Will check back in Wednesday, once I’m home and hopefully recovered.

  4. Me either Kirsty! I’ve tried kangaroo and venison and hated the gamey taste of both – that’s about as adventurous as I get!

  5. I have always found that cooks/chefs that prepare these ‘stranger’ foods know what they are doing, and whilst I don’t like the idea of eating, say octopus, it has always been an enjoyable meal. I like being able to push myself in this way. Husband and I’s rule when we eat out is the buy something that we cannot prepare at home, so we always end up with something exotic -ish.

I’ve only ever tried pig’s ear. It was vile. You know me. It’s cakies all the way! And I’m glad I didn’t look at that image while I was eating..*shudders*

  7. I will try anything, well depending on how many wines I’ve had! But my kids are very non-adventurous eaters so I’m not anymore!

I’d get on well with them then! I’d like to say that wish I was more adventurous but I’m happy in my chicken flavoured world!

Oh my lord that picture at the top of your post makes me cringe!! Do people really eat that! I am with you, would be useless on those challenges on Survivor etc! I gag just watching them… ! lol…
