Eurovision!

I’m a self-confessed and unashamed Eurovision tragic. I’ve been watching for over 20 years now and I enjoy it more and more every year.

Eurovision 2014

There’s something about kitschy and over the top music acts that have me at “bonjour.”

Not everyone appreciates the magic of Eurovision. I think you need to have a particular sense of whimsy and a definite appreciation of the ridiculous to really enjoy the spectacle.

For me, it’s not just the cray cray acts that just hold you spellbound and speechless in mirth. Nor the “serious” ballads complete with white costumes, flowing hair and pumped up wind machines. Nor is it the trashy Europop numbers with sparkles, short or barely there skirts and off the wall choreography.

It’s all that and more. It’s the awkward interaction between the hosts. It’s the postcards from the host country that book-end each act. It’s the sheer history of a song contest that has seen the births and deaths of countries ever since the end of WWII. It’s the long winded televoting process that culminates in the naming of the champion country for that year.

It all comes together to make one amazing and unique extravaganza – one that continues to bring smiles to faces around the world, each and every year. And this year already holds the promise of a bearded lady from Austria…can it get any better?

If you are a first timer, make sure you watch Eurovision with friends. Have a party (preferably of the dress-up kind). Watch with your partner or best friend. It’s the communal sharing of the joy of Eurovision that weaves a magic that makes it an annual event for so many.

If you are on your own (and even if you are not!) get onto Twitter and follow the #SBSEurovision hashtag. Share your favourite moments with other Eurovision afficionados on Twitter. I think that’s what I enjoy the most – sharing it all with a community of like-minded people who GET the power and the pull of the world’s most famous song contest.

Eurovision!

Check it out 8.30 pm Friday and Saturday night and 7.30 pm Sunday night on SBS – it’s so worth it!

  1. I’m completely with you – and I might tweet along to SBS too. My family love Eurovision and it was interesting for us being in Europe recently getting a firsthand sense of who does (and doesn’t) care about the comp. I’m particularly curious how the UK will go this year as their song is their best one in ages- but does the rest of Europe hate them too much now?

We just have to try and not find out who wins it before Sunday night! Enjoy.

  3. Not into Eurovision but I saw that bearded lady pic – is that real? Part of me goes ‘good for you’ and part of me thinks she should shave.

Oh how I love it. My friends and I get together and vote. Bonus points for pyrotechnics, wind machines, gratuitous key changes, all-white costuming, costume changes, Rock Eisteddfod-style choreography and bad acting. Quadruple bonus points for all of the above.

I must say, the whole event tonight went to another level when my sis rang me in a panic to tell me their SBS coverage was down. Soon they arrived on our doorstep, and our enjoyment level increased 1000-fold. Eurovision is definitely a social event.

  10. Going to be a contrarian here. Don’t enjoy Eurovision, the other half does, and for all the time we’ve been married. He watches it and I will amuse myself otherwise!

  11. I haven’t watch EuroVision in years. Husband is not a fan 🙁 I used to watch it with my room mates in my single days, us all dressed up and bringing a plate of food and drink to share. It really is a celebration of happy and fun.
