I Must Confess…I’m slow on the uptake

Hello again! Another week, another Monday, another confession. Thank goodness it never gets old…for me anyway! πŸ˜‰

Can I just take a moment to thank the 20 people who linked up last week. 20! It was wonderful to see some newbies as well as the amazing regulars who continue to come by and cleanse their souls for the week ahead. I love you all!

This week’s prompt was inspired by a realisation from last weekend. I sat down on Saturday evening, feeling rather uninspired, and stumbled upon Hairspray which was on the TV for the umpteenth time. I was going to click away like I normally do but for some reason I didn’t and I got sucked into watching it.

I was so glad I did. What an amazing movie. Why hadn’t I seen it before?

Buoyed by my “new to me but old to everyone else” discovery, I was going to follow up with Dirty Dancing which came on afterwards. I am ashamed to confess, I have never seen it either! I was going to try and stay up to rectify that but as I was absolutely stuffed after Gilbert’s birthday party, I gave into my fatigue and went to bed instead.

So I still haven’t seen Dirty Dancing.

I came clean about this on social media and most people were incredulous. I mean it is one of THE defining movies of my generation (those generation Xers around the *cough* 40 mark). I then started to ponder all those other movies, TV shows and books that I have never seen nor read but would have been expected to.

Slow on the uptake

I came up with the following list (and accompanying explanations!):

  • Dirty Dancing (I know this will be sacrilege but Patrick Swayze never did it for me, personally. Also, I have no interest in watching people gyrate against each other)
  • Schindlers List (not interested in serious movies where atrocities are committed and people die, even if it recounts an inspiring war story)
  • Twilight (absolutely zero interest in vampires nor in Robert Pattinson. Besides, Kristen Stewart annoys me with her inability to smile and continual scowl)
  • Saving Private Ryan (I went to the drive-in while in the early stages of courtship with Nathan but fell asleep not long into proceedings. I remember waking up as we were leaving and asking “did they save him?” Yes, I was such a catch!)
  • Boogie Nights/Magic Mike (yep, never seen them, don’t particularly want to, despite the man candy )
  • Pitch Perfect (I’ve heard a lot of good things about this movie but I just haven’t had the energy or motivation to watch it)

  • Breaking Bad (I know it got rave reviews but not my cup of tea)
  • The Walking Dead (too much blood and gore and zombies don’t interest me)
  • Game of Thrones (again, I know it is VERY popular but all that graphic sex and violence is not for me)

  • The Hunger Games (I’ve seen the movies but have little motivation to read the books)
  • Fifty Shades of Grey (Just not interested in any way, shape or form)
  • The latest Bridget Jones’ Diary (the first book was sublime, the second great but I think Bridget has had her day)

There are probably lots of other examples I could name but that should give you an idea of how behind the times I am.

What popular movies, TV shows or books have you failed to see or read?

As usual, link up your confession, visit the other confessors and share the comment love!

BTW, today I’m being a bit of a linkup whore myself and linking with Alicia’s Open Slather as well as the new Laugh Link hosted this week by Michaela from Five Frogs Blog.

  1. Boogie Nights is great and I suspect nothing like Magic Mike….it’s not really that pervy considering the subject matter….
I would also argue Walking Dead doesn’t have enough blood and zombies. Some episodes are more like Days of Our Lives. (Save that speech for when you do ‘I must confess tv shows that fall short of the book’)

  2. I love that you slept thru Private Ryan – that was LOUD!

Yeah, bad isn’t it? I went through a phase where I fell asleep in every movie we saw – I wasn’t exactly the best date you could ask for…;)

  3. Nathan says:

    But… Patrick Swayze… *SWOON*

  4. I’ve seen everything on your list except for The Walking Dead. That’s only because my hubby is a movie/TV nut. I haven’t watched ANY of those reality telly shows like The Kadashians or Jersey Shore or Real Housewives of the Whatever. Now Kirsty, you really should watch Dirty Dancing, it’s lovely πŸ™‚

    • Kirsty says:

I haven’t seen any of those reality shows either – I can’t believe that stuff is on TV. I will make an effort to see Dirty Dancing though!

  5. Mumabulous says:

Now I’ll come clean and admit that I haven’t seen or read most of these either. I will agree with Lydia in that Boogie Nights isn’t exactly the movie you think its going to be – the porn stars are actually shown as multifaceted characters rather than just boobs and willies. Pitch Perfect is a bit of fun.

    • Kirsty says:

Thanks for the tip on Boogie Nights – all I ever heard about it was Mark Wahlberg’s, um, sizeable asset. Glad to hear there’s more to it than that!

  6. Well as I only had a brief stint where I watched TV (it was around Melrose Place era) I’m behind in most things. We do watch the odd movie and I get to attend a lot of arty movie previews but I’m behind there too I’m guessing.

Schindler’s List was our first date and I cried through the entire movie and looked dreadful I was surprised there was a second date to be honest.

    I’m off prompt this week.

  7. I’ve seen all the movies except the Boogie Nights/Magic Mike one … haven’t seen any of the TV shows you’ve mentioned though, or read those books. The movie that I haven’t ever seen (and really don’t want to) is the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Shock, horror!

Had a thought for a prompt for I Must Confess – have you ever been in an ambulance?! xxx

Glad I’m not the only one who hasn’t seen or read those – don’t feel so alone now! Thanks too for the prompt Janet – that could bring up some interesting stories, couldn’t it?

  8. I’ve never seen breaking bad or walking dead. I attempted Game of Thrones but the supernatural side of things freaked me out. I’ve also never seen dirty dancing.

LOL. You know what I must be slow on the uptake too, because I haven’t seen or read any of these either, except Dirty Dancing! I have lost count the number of times I have watched it. Patrick Swayze is smoking hot in this, one of my favorite all time movies πŸ™‚

I haven’t seen Schindlers List, or Magic Mike but I like Boogie Nights…I have seen none of the TV shows mentioned I wouldn’t mind seeing Breaking Bad but Games of Thrones is not my cup of tea (I might be surprised) I think you should rent get out Dirty Dancing tonight!

  11. Thanks for joining the new laugh link and for your linky! And I have seen all those movies you haven’t but am also with you, I haven’t seen those TV series, apart from Breaking Bad, OR those books! I have no interest in non funny movies such as Magic Mike, or Boogie Nights! I’ve never seen Priscella Queen of the Desert!!! πŸ™‚

I do love comedies – I tend to avoid dramas as, to be honest, I have enough of that in my life already! I have actually seen Priscilla, it’s a bit of and the music is fabulous x

  12. OMG. I must confess I have seen every one of those movies, also the tv shows…and read the books haha. Not all my cup of tea, but some really surprised me. Oh, and I loved Hairspray!!

    • Kirsty says:

Well done you! You must be more open to new things than I am – as I don’t get to see movies all that often or have a lot of time to read I usually go for things that I know I will like instead of trying something new. I should be more adventurous though!

  13. Ness says:

I haven’t seen any of those movies either! Nor do I watch those TV shows. Moreover I also don’t watch My Kitchen Rules or The Block. I’ve never even watched or read the Harry Potter series despite having three sons!! I’m not sure I’m human really. I went a bit off topic today….

  14. Tegan says:

I should have read your post before writing my own! I haven’t seen most of those movies or tv shows and have only read one of the books. I wouldn’t worry too much about seeing Pitch Perfect..I found it quite boring and if it wasn’t for Rebel Wilson it wouldn’t even be funny.

    • Kirsty says:

I have friends who rave about Pitch Perfect – isn’t it funny how all our tastes vary so greatly? I love the uniqueness of us all – I would be short of blog fodder if I didn’t!

  15. Suzy Mac says:

I confess I don’t watch ANY TV ‘shows’ – at all. Well not Australian ones (Property ladder doesn’t count).
When I sit in the doctor’s waiting room or the hair salon, looking through the trash-magazines, I don’t know any of the people being gossiped about.. .

But please tell me you’ve seen Pretty Woman at least 5 times?!

    • Kirsty says:

I can relieve your mind Suzy, I have indeed seen Pretty Woman multiple times!

P.S I LOVE Property Ladder – it totally counts!

  16. Zita says:

oh my there are so many on your list that I agree with! Especially the TV shows! no interest in any of those. I will admit to reading the 50 Shades series! I am a single girl in my 30s after all! πŸ˜‰
My advice would be give Magic Mike a complete miss but watch Pitch Perfect when you want a movie where you just want a bit of a laugh and not have to think too hard! lol…

fyi..didn’t link up this week as am doing my AtoZ Challenge and not ‘confessing’ anything it it! But am looking forward to reading all the posts!

  17. I haven’t seen schindlers list, too depression. I haven’t seen any of the Hunger Games, not really interested. Haven’t ever seen any James Bond movies and I haven’t seen Game of Thrones but would love to know what all of the fuss is about. I started 50 Shades of Grey but got bored of a story line that didn’t seem to be going anywhere!

I’ve seen pretty much all the Bond movies as my husband is a huge Bond fan. Having said that we normally spend most of the old films laughing at the kitschness!
