I Must Confess…My Dream Blog Name

The most important part of setting up a blog is selecting a name.

Selecting THE name that will represent your site, represent your writing and represent YOU.

It can be a really huge decision.

The name you ultimately go with may be governed by a number of factors. It’s important to secure a domain name for your blog and it’s ideal to get the same name as your blog but sometimes that isn’t available.

It could be your dream name has already been taken by someone else.

Or you struggle finding THE name that brings together all your passions and interests.

I must confess that the whole process fascinates me.

My first blog name was very quickly put together – Krusty Kernels. It was a sad attempt at alliteration and a play on words (my nickname, Krusty, combined with a reference to kernels of truth). I was very new to blogging and didn’t even know what I wanted to blog about so no real forethought went into the decision.

A few months later, with some experience and more understanding of what I wanted to write, I re-thought my blog name. I wanted something that kept the focus on “truth” but also didn’t pin me into a corner and give people expectations that I couldn’t meet.

I knew I wanted to talk about my life, autism, albinism, parenting, being a working mum and anything else that took my fancy. I didn’t want to refer to anything specific in the name as I didn’t want to force myself to have to write about the one thing all the time.

I thought of all sorts of options – the pressure to get it right was immense. But I finally came up with My Home Truths. Which perfectly aligned to everything. It’s about me (obviously!), it’s my truth and what I experience in and around my home.

And, the .com domain was free – bonus!

Three years on and I have no regrets about the name of my blog – it is still my dream name and I can not think of anything else I would call it. Hand on my heart. My home truth!

I love my blog name

Honestly Mystery Case is a bit of a search engine nightmare and it possibly sends a misleading message about what the blog is actually about but I just love it.

    • Kirsty says:

The play on your name is great and it really leaves your blog open for anything you want it to be. I’m a big fan of not pinning yourself into a corner when it comes to a blog name and you’ve certainly gone outside the box with yours!

  2. Zita says:

I love the explanation and title of your blog Kirsty! I was lucky in that my blog name came very easy to me and as I had no idea what I was doing I wasn’t stressed out by .com availability and all that as I didn’t know I needed to be! lol…

I do really like your blog name – it’s such an awesome springboard for pretty much anything you want to write about. You definitely lucked in with that decision Zita!!!

  3. Aroha says:

I wanted Chasing Sunset but it was taken by someone who never wrote a post! Grace told me a while ago it was for sale – for $200,000 or something ridiculous 🙁 Makes me angry that people can do this. Love “My Home Truths” it suits perfectly I think!

    • Kirsty says:

Thanks Aroha – but it sucks about the name that you wanted. For ages I got emails from people trying to sell me the other string domain names for My Home Truths but I was never asked to pay as much as that. Definitely wrong x

  4. Ness says:

I love your blog title and think it fits you perfectly. I never took it seriously when I thought of mine, obviously and have backed myself nicely into a bogan corner. Classy.

    • Kirsty says:

I love all the other options you could have gone for Ness – a veritable goldmine of material! If it makes you feel any better I didn’t think much about my first blog name either…you should never put “krusty” with anything!

  5. I love your blog name too, it just fits right 🙂

Mine have evolved over the years, I think my first was Cinderellas Stash, then Cinderellas Sundance, then Saturday Morning Ogre Mum, until FINALLY I decided my blog is me, so it needed to be named who I am. And that’s The Miss Cinders – because that’s what everyone knows me as!

Who’d have thunk choosing a blog name would need so much thought!

    MC xo
P.S. I will fix up the TIK button and let you know the new code. I’m sorry I had to delete it, it’s made a big link and image mess for other bloggers 🙁

    • Kirsty says:

Don’t worry about that MC – just worry about getting your blog the way you want it to be. BTW I’m going to try to be more organised and join in with TIK again on a Friday – I seem to burn out early on in the week, these days!!!

  6. I love your blog name Kirsty. As you know I recently took the plunge & changed my name from Redland City Living to Middle Aged Mama. I’d felt for quite a while that I needed to change my blog name – the whole local area thing just wasn’t working for me – the major obstacle was what new name to choose?! When I finally came up with MAM over the Christmas break, AND the .com.au was available, my decision was made for me! It’s still early days yet but I am a lot happier with the fit and direction of my blog now. It remains to be seen if readers agree! 😉

    • Kirsty says:

You were the inspiration for the prompt Janet!!! It was a brave move to change your name but I think it definitely works for you. Seeing yourself and Jess and Grace change things up and still grow successful blogs shows that if you are not happy you can make a change and still thrive!

  7. Yes I like your name, it does accurately reflect what you write about. As for me, well I might have just added Have A Laugh On Me – sometimes!!!
    Thanks for linky lovely xxx

    • Kirsty says:

No, your name is great and you are funny pretty much most of the time! Looking forward to watching your blog grow and evolve. BTW, how did you go in putting together a media kit?

  8. Jaz says:

Thank god you change your name! Krusty Kernels conjures up images of something that is the exact opposite of you and your blog 🙂
No post from me this week as I wasn’t organised enough, looking forward to reading everyone else’s though x

    • Kirsty says:

Yes, I shudder when I think of my old blog name…krusty doesn’t really give a good vibe, does it? BTW, feel free to link up an older post if you have one you would like to share – no need to link up something completely new, I’m pretty relaxed about the linkup x

  9. Tegan says:

My first ‘blog’ was on livejournal and it was something ridiculously juvenile..so bad that I don’t even want to say what it was!
I love the name of your blog and like you say it describes perfectly what you write about.

Krusty Kernels – I love it. I sooo wish I’d stumbled on your blog back then Kirsty, you know damn well I’d have made a smart-arse comment (or 2)! Not that I’m really in a position to pass comment considering the original name of my blog.

As for My Home Truths, I reckon it’s perfect. It truly reflects the blog and you.

  11. Krusty Kernels? There’s something very quirky about it! Although I must confess, I’m a sucker for alliteration! Having said that, I do like My Home Truths as it speaks a lot more about you and well, what you write about… 🙂

  12. I actually really love my blog name. The way I came up with it is explained in my about me (the girl) page. I totally forgot to link up!
