Musical Musings: Au:Sum

It’s my last musical musing for the year. Thanks to everyone who has read or commented on my musings during 2013. I have really enjoyed indulging in my love of music and being able to share it with you all.

I wanted to end the year by showcasing the talents of an amazing group of people. The good folk at Rosie’s School of Rock run a fantastic program called Au:Sum where kids on the autism spectrum come together as a band.

Watch the video on the Au:Sum page – it really does show what the program is all about.

Apart from developing music skills, the program also fosters teamwork and social skills – it’s a place where kids on the spectrum are respected, valued and can learn how to better interact with others.

Gilbert has been in the Au:Sum program since the start of 2013 and has been in two bands in that time – Exploding Volcano and Blackout Thunder & the Sonics. They have put together two fantastic songs – Friends With You and Space Dance – which I want to share with you today.

Not being a proud mama or anything but Gilbert was the lead lyricist for both songs and performs vocals on both tracks. He even does a mean rap on Space Dance – that’s my boy!

I have included the audio from both songs for you today – I hope you enjoy the energy that went into the writing, performing and production of each track.

I’m so grateful to everyone who has contributed to the Au:Sum program – Craig, Jordan and everyone from Rosie’s; Lauren from ASPECT who comes along each week to make sure the kids are well supported; and the other parents who took a chance on the program and have seen their children blossom as a result.

I’ll be back in the new year with more musings of a musical nature – until then, take care and have a fabulous holiday season!
