I Must Confess…The Truth About Christmas

So it’s finally December and we can now give in to the Christmas hype that seems to have been around since September, at least.

I swear it gets earlier and earlier every year.

I’ve been steadfastly trying to ignore Christmas this year. I’ve been more focused on our upcoming trip away and work and keeping Gilbert as stress-free as possible as the year draws to a close. I suppose I won’t be able to ignore it for much longer though…

I must confess my relationship with Christmas this year is complicated.

On one hand, I always look forward to Christmas. The beauty of carols, the fun of presents, the wonder of Santa, the extra social gatherings and the general good will that marks Christmas is infectious and makes my heart sing. It never gets old – I guess I am a big kid at heart.

On the other hand, the rush of engagements, the stress of changing routines, the fight for carparks, the crowds at shopping centres, juggling work and end of school commitments and the struggle to find the right present makes this time of year rather challenging. Which is why I’ve been putting my Christmas plans off as long as possible.

I suspect I’m not the only one who has mixed feelings as the silly season moves into top gear. But a part of me does wish Christmas could uncomplicate itself, just for one year.

I must confess I just want to soak up the wonder and enjoy it all again, without the worry, stress and running around. Wouldn’t that be so much better than feeling conflicted and obligated and stressed?

How do you really feel about Christmas this year? Confess, share and feel better for coming clean as part of I Must Confess!

  1. I almost had a heart attack when they said it was 24 days til xmas (It’s been coming for so long now, it’s hard to take it seriously.) Need to start getting organised, but a few things to do first. I did get the advent calendars up on time, so that’s something!

I know exactly what you mean!!! I am also torn every year at this time of year.. Hate the pressure to buy presents, the stress of attempting to go shopping, the craziness that seems to enter everyone…and after the year I have had I just want to hide under something and not come out til January!
    Good luck! 🙂

  4. I must confess that even tho it is indeed December and we did go Christmas tree shopping yesterday, I remain in denial that there are only 2.5 weeks left of the school year and 23 sleeps til Christmas. Hence my confession this week has nothing to do with Christmas! 😉

I loved your confession this week Emma! And I’m still in denial that we are hosting Christmas this year…it’ll sort itself out by itself, surely…;)

  5. Well I’ve been complaining about Christmas since it appeared in the shops in September, and I’ve blogged about my complaints a little too much. In order to find some xmas cheer I have 12 days of giveaways on the blog.

Honestly though, I just want it to be over already.

Loving your 12 days of giveaways Raych – such an awesome idea. I really hope you find that xmas cheer before the month is out!

Christmas does seem a bit ho hum for me this year. It doesn’t seem quite real just yet.

  7. Honestly? I’m in denial about Christmas this year. I know there will be difficulties with various family members about who we see and when; my nan is terminally ill and may not make it that far; and I hate all the commercial hype, it just feels like buying presents for the sake of buying presents, not because we really want to.

That’s the way it feels for me too sometimes Janet. I hope I can grab some time to make some really good present choices this year. I just want to avoid resorting to gift cards, yet again…

I hope you do get to spend xmas with your nan x

  8. I must confess I am terrified it is 22 days away and am completely disorganised. Since I had kids I have been a disaster.

I am excited as well though because our oldest is turning 3 next week and he was running around last night screaming ‘Christmas tree, Christmas tree’ after we put it up. Christmas Day should be fun from that perspective 🙂

Glad I’m not the only one who is disorganised, especially since having kids! Hope you have a wonderful day – I bet your son will love every moment of it x

It’s Santa’s fault. He hangs out with that lazy Dinner Fairy. I know it. Hope you do manage to relax when the day arrives!

Yes, I’ve actually made an appearance this week. Finally! I’ve missed this space. xo

I feel exactly the same way about Christmas. I always enjoy aspects of it, but the busyness just gets to me sometimes. I think I prefer Mother’s Day to Christmas, because I get to do nothing all day long and that suits me fine!

    • Kirsty says:

Good point Shelly – we don’t exactly get pampered on xmas day, do we? But today I’m looking forward to it rather than dreading it – but that could all change tomorrow…;)

  11. I have a love-hate relationship with Christmas too. I am ridiculously unprepared this year. Luckily my sister is hosting it so I don’t have to worry about any of the food. I wish we could all just go on a holiday together as a family and forget about presents! Some of my nieces and nephews are so hard to buy for. I spend hours deliberating over what I’m going to get them and I don’t think they ever use what I end up getting them.

  12. Forgot to link up yesterday, even though I had my post scheduled and everything, so have just joined in now. I love Christmas, but I also need to have everything done by December 1 so I’m not at the shopping centers on weekends leading up to Christmas. That gives me hives! When is your trip? I am really feeling the “end of year” exhaustion/blues here and hanging for school to be over! I’m a bit worried about my baby boy heading into grade 1 next year and how he’s going to cope. He’s coming apart at the seams a bit here with less than 2 weeks to go. 🙁
