Musical Musings A to Z: X is for eXtreme

Welcome to another installment of my journey through the musical alphabet. It’s been a fun ride, although a little bumpy at certain points in the road. Like today.

So, as you can see, I’m cheating a little this week…yes I am well aware that technically my choice today doesn’t actually start with X.

My old music classmate Dave will be having a chuckle today. He’s been asking me for a while who I was going to feature as my X artist. But I have to confess I don’t have a favourite artist starting with X – do you?

So I have resorted to a band whose name sounds like it starts with an X but actually has the X for their second letter – surely that counts?

Extreme were a late 80s/early 90s heavy rock band who burst out of nowhere with their second album in 1991. I remember many hours practicing the harmonies perfected by this group when I was in high school – truly soul inspiring.

Extreme were also pretty handy with the acoustic guitar and had a string of hits in the early 90s, two of which I have included below for your listening pleasure.

More Than Words

This song is so simple yet so beautiful. Perfect harmonies complemented by a single acoustic guitar. Just perfect.

Hole Hearted

This is a little more upbeat and funky, yet still features the same striking harmonies that makes More Than Words so powerful. I have to confess I haven’t listened to this one in many years but it brought back so many vivid memories of my high school years – I felt I was channeled back to the schoolyard!

So apart from my good friend Dave, who I know has an X artist all lined up, do you have a favourite artist starting with X?

And are you ready to come up with Y and Z for the last two weeks of my quest? See you then!

Love these and they took me back to school times too!

  2. Oooh wah! You cheated!

Here I was thinking you’d choose a classic from XTC. If you’d’ve asked, I was going to suggest XTC’s “Senses Working Overtime” or “Generals and Majors”, probably their two most well known songs that I can think of.

Can’t wait to see who you select for Y and Z!
