What a Week!

So, how about this week, then? Did you expect to go back to the future again with Kevin 07?

I must admit all Wednesday night I sat glued to ABC1 to watch it all unfold. For those living under a rock or living on the other side of the world, Wednesday saw our previous Prime Minister return to the top job by challenging the woman who had deposed him 3 years before.

It was messy and dramatic and possibly completely unnecessary. And I loved every moment.

You see, I’m a sucker for political drama and intrigue – I even enjoy watching election coverage (sad but true!)

3 years ago I vividly remember watching similar scenes when Julia Gillard successfully challenged Kevin Rudd for leadership of the Labor Party, thus challenging for the position of Prime Minister as well.

It was more than surreal to watch it all happen all over again this week, this time, with the opposite result.

To be honest, I have mixed feelings about it all. I felt bad for Kevin the first time around. I was moved by his concession speech and I thought it was bad form to depose a first term Prime Minister.

Yet I was also proud to have our first female PM. It was great to see such a strong role model for women and girls everywhere. I did not like the way she came to power but I did deeply respect Julia Gillard as a politician.

So, while in a way the events of Wednesday rectified an earlier wrong (in a way) it also left a bad taste in my mouth and left me, like so many others, wondering when the Labor party would start to look outside of itself and stop the self-destruction and annihilation.

Call me naive, but I would love to see less self-interest and far more passion and concern for the community in our politicians. Do you agree?

Anyway, while the week was rather strange, it was also quite funny. Again, the makers of memes had a field day and came up with some corkers below:

Like a train wreck, it’s hard to look away…

What are your feelings over the events in Canberra over the last week? Do you even care?

Ooh good, someone else like me!
Your feelings on the whole thing, from Kevin Rudd being deposed to Julia Gillard’s deposing this week, pretty much mirror mine.
Except I have to say that while I loved him in 07 and still liked him in 2010, by 2013 what with the extraordinary and damaging 3-year campaign of revenge and undermining of his own party, I am completely over Kevin Rudd.
But I do understand why he was voted in again this week. No tears of fury from me 😉
I just wrote about this on my blog too. But instead of memes I added my favourite funny tweets from the night.
    Good times!

We need fresh blood in politics – people who really care about the community and who will put the good of the people before themselves. Let’s hope we see some improvements sometime soon!

Just getting around to reading your post and I know I commented on your facebook post and said I didn’t care and while to a point that remains true, I think we should all care to some degree! It is our country afterall! And I have been sick and tired of this leadership speculation and will he/won’t he/should he/ shouldn’t he BS that has been going on back and forwards and taking focus on what they really should be doing and that is running our country! I didn’t like the way she disposed of him 3 years ago and have never been a big fan of hers and I find myself totally agreeing with the 3 reasons he gave for wanting to come back! Anyway I’ll get off my soap box off your blog for now! lol….

Feel free to come on over and rant any time Zita! I just want the focus to be on policy now, rather than personalities…we’ll have to wait and see whether that is possible or not.

  3. Like most things, I missed it! It was only when I was catching up with social media the next day that I finally caught up.

I think very much like you with this one.
Mystery Case recently posted..I must confess… I may need a moment for this one!

I think a lot of people feel the same way – I just hope we see a little more policy now and less of the politicking…
