Musical Musings A to Z: K is for Lenny Kravitz

I’ve decided to pull myself away from my Eurovision addiction just long enough to continue with my musical quest through the alphabet. You can catch my earlier A to Z musical musings below:

A is for Rick Astley

B is for Ben Folds Five

C is for Cake

D is for Doobie Brothers

E is for En Vogue and Eternal

F is for Aretha Franklin

G is for Garbage

H is for Hall & Oates

I is for INXS

J is for Michael Jackson

Before I move on, is anyone else addicted to Eurovision too? I can’t wait for the final tonight – should be a ball!

Anyway, onto my K artist. Lenny Kravitz is one of my all-time favourite artists. His career has spanned decades, musical genres and hairstyles but he seems to rock everything he puts his hand to. He’s even a half-decent actor – did you happen to catch him in The Hunger Games?

I love his rock stuff, his pop stuff, his ballads and his soul classics. It was incredibly hard to come up with only a few songs to feature today but I hope you enjoy the songs I have included below…

The Resurrection

Slow and powerful, this song has a strong acoustic guitar introduction before ramping up with drums, bass and guitar. I’m not religious by any means, but this song speaks to me with it’s inherent passion and belief.

It Ain’t Over til it’s Over

Funky and showcasing his retro musical influences, this song is smooth. This is the first song I ever heard from Lenny Kravitz and I fell instantly in love – instant pop classic.

Are You Gonna Go My Way?

Again featuring his strong retro influences, this rock classic is one of his best. This album holds a special place in my heart as it was released in 1993, during my HSC year at school. Some interesting memories are intertwined with this song and the rest of this album…

Make sure you come back and check in on the remainder of my musical quest through the alphabet!

  1. Wow – The Resurrection? I don’t even remember that track by him! I haven’t played the “Circus” LP for years, so now I’m gonna have to dig in the archives to find my copy and listen again.

I was never a big fan of his Philly soul tracks, a la track two above, but I will say this for him – it is a gorgeously affectionate tribute – it sounds just like old school Philly soul.

As for “Are You Gonna Go My Way?” Well you’re either dead or have a heart of stone not to moved by that track…
