Light It Up Blue

Sunday afternoon saw us venture out of the comfort of our home to be a part of Light It Up Blue for Autism.

The sea of blue that greeted us as we arrived at Civic Park in Newcastle was inspiring and truly breathtaking!

We joined in a celebration of awareness with other families living with autism everyday. We caught up with some old friends, teachers and therapists. In fact, it seemed to bother Gilbert that we met more of his ex-teachers than his ex-classmates!

There was a jumping castle, martial arts demonstrations, bubbles, finger painting, hair spraying, food and a stage to keep everyone entertained. The girls LOVED getting their finger nails painted different shades of blue!

We didn’t end up staying very long as Gilbert had been a reluctant attendee in the first place and was disturbed by the noise of the music coming from the stage. But I was proud that he allowed us to stay for nearly an hour to lend our support to the cause – that was a huge effort for him.

While it was unfortunate that we didn’t get to witness several iconic Newcastle landmarks being lit up blue, we did get to enjoy the wonderful sight of the Newcastle and Hunter Valley autism community coming together as one.

To me, that was indeed an even more awesome sight to behold!

  9. That’s awesome that the whole community gets behind it like that. We haven’t had any blue landmarks here (that I’ve seen anyway), but there has been a huge amount of community support.
