Pick Me Ups

You may have noticed recently that I have been less than my normally sunny self. Life has been a little bit crazy and it appears that I do not have the mental and emotional resources to cope as well as I would like.

The competing pressures of work, housework, the house build, deciding whether we are going to stay or move from our current rental, after school activities and the stress of increasingly anxious kids will do that to you.

So in a bid to avoid wallowing in an ocean of my own self-pity, I have been trying out my usual pick me ups, to see whether they can help get me through this hump.

Keep Breathing

1. Trash TV

Bring on The Block, Downton Abbey, Castle, How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory and Happy Endings. These shows do the job of keeping me occupied from dwelling on all the real life stuff and usually give me a laugh in the process, which I sorely need right now.

2. Go-to DVDs

Don’t we all have those classic movies that are our go-to DVDs when we are sick or down? Mine are the usual rom coms (Love Actually, The Wedding Planner, etc), historical classics (Pride & Prejudice, Lost in Austen, etc) and my favourite webseries (Lizzie Bennet Diaries, The Guild, etc). They are oldies but goodies.

3. Upbeat music

I love cranking out the beats when I’m down and need a pick me up. Β Music has always soothed my soul. Funky dance tunes, frothy pop and smooth grooves ease the burden of my mind and gives me a pick me up whenever I am down. You cannot underestimate the power of a good tune.

4. Getting Social

Getting together with friends also goes a long way to helping me feel better when I am down. I am looking forward to a much needed catch up with some other mums in a couple of weeks time. I’m looking forward to the wine, the food and the company – they get it and sometimes an understanding ear is all you need to pick yourself up and dust yourself off.

5. Kiddy Cuddles

If all else fails, try the kiddy cuddle. These never fail. There’s something about snuggling with the kids and holding on as if you’ll never let go that makes everything alright again. Kiddy cuddles cure just about everything. They are awesome.

  1. My favourite pick me up is going to the movies – to see pretty much anything. I decompress – I sit by myself in the dark and escape my own world, my own head.

    My pick me up movies are more action flicks – I generally hate rom com’s. Die Hard 4 or Red are my current favs, which I can apparently watch endlessly. They’re my feel good movies for the minute….

      I quite enjoy those sorts of movies too – I especially like those that don’t take themselves seriously, such as The Expendables. My other go to genre is disaster flicks – I just love them!

    By the way, I’ve worked full time with kids, part time and stayed at home. Full time is by far the hardest, and the only person to suffer is you (kids are totally fine) so just cut yourself some slack (and if possible, get a cleaner!)

      Thanks Lydia. I’m actually technically part-time (5 hours a day, 5 days a week) but that is only a technicality. Most days I feel like I am working 2 full time jobs – I do need to cut myself more slack, thanks for the reminder!

      I love a good cuppa too. And I need to catch up with some friends too – despite the effort I know it will be worth it in the end if I can just get my act together and do it!

    We have had similar stresses going on, and are just about to start building! To get through it I love tv shows like Parks & Recreations and New Girl so I can just have a good laugh! Hanging out with friends helps put things in perspective too!! X Karen #teamIBOT

      Building is just so stressful isn’t it? And we haven’t even got to the actual building part yet, either! I just hope we come out of it in one piece – all the very best luck to you guys too!

  13. OOh great post! I’m picking up tips from some of your ideas but also all the comments. My pick me up is definitely exercise and nutrition – I know I sink if I’ve no endorphins or too much sugar/bad food choices running through my system – effects my moods immediately. Also the outdoors – I get away from the city or leave the house as often as possible when glum.

  14. I like to grab a coffee and go sit on the beach and write (notebook) or listen to music. Clears my mind and picks me right up.

  15. Oh hun, I feel for you – truly – it’s so hard to get through some days isn’t it? As for pick me ups, I don’t have them, at the moment, I just have ‘get me throughs’ and that’s okay also. Thinking of you, and like Dory says, just keep on swimming – HUGS xx

      Thanks Em – I love Dory and that saying is very apt at the moment. It’s literally either sink or swim for me right now so I’m doing all I can to swim!

  18. My favourite pick me up is definitely music/dancing. It needs to be high energy and very upbeat. Needs a bit of base. Yep … chair dancing will do it.
