I Must Confess…I’m a bit of a Fangirl!

It’s Monday which means it’s confession day – yay!

Thanks again to all of you who shared a little more of yourselves last week – as always, you make me feel less alone in the over-sharing stakes…

This week’s prompt asks us to share a secret interest or obsession which, I know, may be a big ask for some of you. Why disclose something that you have always kept to yourself? That is a very valid question.

But, while it can be confronting to confess in these situations, I think it could be very healthy for us to share some of these interests and obsessions – let’s call it an online intervention, shall we?

Today I am seeking your help to intervene in my latest obsession – it seems I have turned into a bit of a fangirl.

What’s a fangirl, I hear some of you ask? Well the Urban Dictionary provides the following definition:

Fangirl: A rabid breed of human female who is obsessed with either a fictional character or an actor. Similar to the breed of fanboy. Fangirls congregate at anime conventions and livejournal. Have been known to glomp, grope, and tackle when encountering said obsessions.

Okay, so I have never congregated at a convention (well, I have, but not in relation to this particular interest) and I most certainly have never glomped, groped or tackled the object of my obsession. But I do tend to spend too much time cruising the interwebs to find out everything I can about it.

My obsession? The Lizzie Bennet Diaries.

I have mentioned my love for this modern day adaption of Pride & Prejudice before but it seems I am now seriously obsessed. The creators of this series have been very clever in re-telling Lizzie’s story through YouTube vlogs, complemented by a total transmedia approach that includes twitter interaction with all of the characters, tumblrs, dummy websites to match crucial elements of the story and facebook pages.

It all makes it very easy to fall down that rabbit hole and forget to come back!

I can’t wait for Tuesdays and Fridays to view a new episode and I love checking out all the fan fiction, blogs, tumblrs and pages devoted to the adaption. I relish reading the comments left by other fans and gobble any morsel of information that happens to be dropped by the creators.

Fortunately for me, this adaption is due to finish up in a couple of weeks time so hopefully I will soon be free of this particular obsession. But I will genuinely miss the fun of congregating with other fans online and discovering the wild world of fandom.

While I’m not game enough as yet to fully participate myself, I have been so excited to have discovered a whole new world where there is no limit to imagination or flights of fancy. It truly is intoxicating.

With time, I’m sure that I could turn into a total fangirl….hence my cry for help to all you good folk today!

Are you going to be brave and confess to your secret interest or obsession this week? Or do you have something else to share with our wonderful community today?

By now, you should know what to do – make your confession, link up and cleanse your soul!

Interesting! I’m on time and on topic again this week. Not sure if I can stay on topic next week, while I pride myself on being able to promote other people, I feel rather odd when I’m asked to promote myself.

I feel I have made my opinion of Pride & Prejudice clear already, and I thoroughly approve. No intervention required here…

Actually, it is very clever what the producers of the Lizzie Bennet Diaries have done. I am a big fan of transmedia entertainment like this, where you are encouraged to explore, interact with and get involved with the medium. What ever will you do when it is all over?

I don’t know – it’s set to finish next week! I do know they are planning on another adaption so hopefully that will also be up my alley. I guess I could always do more around the house if I find myself at too much of a loss!!!!

  3. Rhianna says:

I must confess that I don’t think I have ever heard of this show let alone actually wanted it. I really need to get more up with the times don’t I?

Totally love next week’s prompt by the way. I am all over that! Fairy wishes and butterfly kisses lovely and thanks as always for hosting

I’m looking forward to next week – I need a lift and I hope people do come on board and recognise all their wonderful qualities! Have an awesome time in Sydney Rhi – I really, really wish I could have found a way to get down there. Fingers crossed for the next one!

  4. Janet says:

Kirsty, I couldn’t think of a secret obsession this week – mainly because my obsessions aren’t hidden! LOL. I haven’t heard of the Lizzie Bennet diaries but yes, looks addictive!

    • Kirsty says:

I’m a bit the same as you Janet – most of my interests are not a secret at all, but I did need to get this one off my chest as I don’t think I have ever been more intrigued by a concept! Thanks for playing along again Janet!

  5. Ness says:

I hadn’t heard of The Lizzie Bennet Diaries either, but it sounds interesting. I need to get a new interest or hobby besides my Karen Carpenter obsession so that’s what I’ve confessed.

    • Kirsty says:

You should totally check LBD out, it really is an intriguing concept. As for getting new obsessions, if your old ones are still working for you, why mess with a good thing??? 🙂 Thanks yet again being a part of the linkup Ness!

  6. Cathy says:

I’ve never heard of this series but it sounds extremely clever – love the fact that they have integrated it with social media! The producers obviously have their finger on the pulse. I’m obsessed with lots of things/people – probably my greatest is Marilyn Monroe (I finally wrote a blog post about it last year). I could read about Marilyn (and her death) and look at pictures of her all day every day!

    • Kirsty says:

It’s funny how we get intensely interested in different things, isn’t it? I’m not usually obsessed by things but LBD has really caught my interest. Let’s just ignore the other obsession that I have developed in recent years – blogging!!!! Thanks for again linking up Cathy!

  7. I crawled out from under my rock today to say that I can’t believe I haven’t heard of the Lizzie Bennet Diaries, and as you well know, I’m an open book so don’t have too many secrets, I’m a total over sharer. But I’m all over next week’s prompt for shiz! (although it’s my daughter’s 5th birthday party the day before, I shall try and be organised so I can participate again). Hope you have a great week Kirst x

    • Kirsty says:

I’m surprised I had a secret of my own to share, being the chronic over-sharer that I am too! See how you go, family and real life come first. My son’s Ninjago party is on the weekend too, so there’s a chance I may not be feeling at all awesome after that! 😉

  8. Jo Tracey says:

I’ve never heard of this, but as a P & P fan, will be checking it out- just what I need, another addiction! Speaking of which, struggling with topic this week- but I will get there…

If you are a P&P fan you will love this Jo! And have a rest this week if the inspiration is not there – sometimes there’s nothing else for it…

  9. I haven’t heard of this one, but *if* I were to confess my first and only fangirl obsession, it would be Homeland. I am totally, crazily, hooked. Is it odd that I’m becoming a fangirl in my thirties? I would have thought that was about the time I was expected to outgrown it?!?

    • Kirsty says:

I turned into a fangirl in my thirties too Amanda – I’ve never been so obsessed about something as I am now. Maybe it’s our version of an early mid-life crisis???

  10. Rhian @melbs says:

The Lizzie Bennet diaries look good, I love stuff like that. I am a Home and Away fangirl (that’s bad isn’t it).

I think I blog too much because I haven’t even heard about the Liz Bennett Diaries…forgive me??
But I have heard the term “fan girl” Maybe my head isn’t completely buried in the sand 🙂

You’re forgiven Grace! I’m sad because today was the last video but they are going to make a new series soon so hopefully I will still have the chance to be a total fangirl 🙂
