Musical Musings A to Z: A is for Rick Astley

I’ve been thinking about hosting an A to Z of artists that I love for some time now and I’ve finally done something about it!

For the next 26 weeks you will be subjected treated to an alphabet inspired tour of the artists that I love – it’s going to be awesome.

So without further ado, let’s kick this off with A for Rick Astley.

I have been looking for an excuse to feature one of my favourite 80’s idols for a long time now, but for one reason or another, I never quite got there.

Until today.

Rick Astley has an amazing voice and I must admit that even my 12 year old self was surprised to find that the owner of this rich, soulful voice was a UK bloke with red hair!

He only had a short career but apparently he is still the only male solo artist to have had his first 8 singles reach the top 10 in the UK – that is certainly nothing to sneeze at.

The two songs I’m going to feature today are his most famous and most successful and remain among my all-time favourite tracks to this very day. I’m a sucker for a catchy pop tune, after all!

Never Gonna Give You Up

Let’s get this out of the way first – the video has dated badly, his wardrobe is dreadful and his dance moves are worse. However, despite these factors (and the formulaic pop of the song itself) there’s something fun and catchy about this that just makes me smile.

Whenever You Need Somebody

This is my all-time favourite from Rick Astley. The bass line really drives this song – I found myself uncontrollably tapping my foot when looking for this on YouTube last night!

Here’s to A for Rick Astley – make sure you come back next week to continue on my musical alphabet quest!

As usual, I’m linking up with Cass Can Sew for the Sunday Session – go on and check out the other music posts linked up there this week.

Rick was so cute – I was a little young to really fall for him but he was so clean cut and wholesome – who wouldn’t love him???

  4. Hi Kirsty,

As for X, try XTC, or even X, the band from Sydney. I love this track by X and I’ve added it to this month’s playlist on my blog, which will be released on Friday!
