Musical Musings – Ode to the Stars

Gilbert was lucky enough to get a telescope for Christmas along with some books about space, the planets and the stars.

Last night we finally got it out and had a good look through it – the moon was looking particularly bright and alluring.

So much so that it has inspired a musical musings post today that really is an ode to the stars. Here are my favourite songs about stars, the moon, the galaxy and all that is in it…

Tasmin Archer – Sleeping Satellite

I love the acoustic guitar in this one and Tasmin’s vocals too – this reminds me of high school and early mornings getting up to watch the Top 50 on Rage!

The Church – Under the Milky Way

This is a fantastic live version of their 80s classic – again lots of acoustic guitar and a simple bass line that just sucks you in.

Simply Red – Stars

Yeah, I had a thing for Mick Hucknall in my youth. I could listen to his voice forever… This was the first Simply Red album I ever bought and it was played on high rotation throughout Year 9 and 10 – such a classic album.

Brand New Heavies – You are the Universe

This is quite an amusing video (just ignore the bad dubbing between audio and video) and matches the song’s fun and funky vibe. A perfect way to end our odyssey past the stars.

Kirsty, I’ve always loved Sleeping Satellite, no matter how many times I’ve heard it. It reminds me of a time when I had my first job and had only just my husband–so long ago! Under the Milky Way is also one of my favourites. Excellent choice this week!

I love songs that bring back particular memories or remind you of great times in your life – glad I was able to bring back some good times for you today!

I used to love Simply Red too, I saw them twice in concert as a teen. Haven’t listened to them in aaages. We also have an old telescope we haven’t used for ages. You may have inspired me to dust off the telescope and my Simply Red albums. šŸ™‚

I have to admit I hadn’t listened to it for years but I’ve always loved it – The Church were really quite underrated as a band.

I love Simply Red’s Stars. I hadn’t heard You Are The Universe before – you’re right, pretty funky

Thanks Nat. I just wish the audio and video matched up better in the Brand New Heavies video – things like that always distract me from the song itself…

  6. Great selection Kirsty. I remember the Simply Red album when it came out. It was the perfect music to listen to on a Saturday afternoon when a couple girlfriends came over and we drank wine and ate cheese and biscuits. Love your selection this week.

Thanks Anne. I’ll have to do a post devoted to Simply Red one of these days as they have so many classic songs, running the gamut of genres – the only problem would be narrowing down my choice to only a few!

  7. I’m also a big ‘under the milky way’ fan – The Strawpeople, a Kiwi band, did a remake of it. I really want our kids to get into the stars and universe but once they’re older I hope we can star watch with a telescope also. x

We did it for practical reasons for Gilbert – he literally can’t see the stars with his vision loss so the telescope will give him a view of the sky that he has never seen. Mind you, I have to work out how to focus it properly without having to resort to the instructions every 2 seconds… šŸ™‚

Great selection, but I’m going to be singing Simple Red all day now. LOL!

Hahaha – I could sing Simply Red all day, everyday. For some reason I’ve got “Something Got Me Started” in my head right now – I hope it doesn’t bother you too much though!

Under the Milky Way has always been a huge favourite of mine! It’s also one of the first songs that My Man the Muso and I ever performed as a duo šŸ™‚
