A Very Bloggy New Year

Welcome to 2013 everyone! I really hope the New Year is going to be an awesome one for you all.

And while we are in a celebratory mood lets say a big happy 2nd blogoversary to me too – hip hip hooray!

Champagne and bubbles

Today marks two years since I wrote my first blog post over at my first blog Krusty Kernels. I wrote 7 posts before drifting away for a few months and later starting up here.

Okay, so technically this blog won’t be 2 until March but as all my posts appear here, I’m going to make the call and pop the champagne for today!

Last year I was not in a celebratory mood for my first blogoversary. There was no celebrations, no self-congratulation. I just let it pass by as I attempted to drag myself out of a start of year funk.

This year feels more positive already. There is no lingering sense of heaviness or depression. I feel ready to get going again. I want to see just how good we can make 2013 for our family.

I will share my personal New Year resolutions in my first I Must Confess post for the year next Monday – I would love to see others link up their new year resolutions too (wink, nudge, hint…!)

But today, I wanted to share some of the goals I’m hoping to achieve during 2013. Because I’m proud to say that I actually have some goals for the blog, for the first time ever!

Goals for Blogging

1. Work towards steady growth on the blog. I’m not aiming for huge growth but I’ve been pleased to see a steady and organic growth in numbers during 2012 and I would like to see that continue in 2013. I will never be a huge blogger but I would like to be a small one that can make a difference and can get some traffic for the posts that matter.

2. Develop a real community. This is a goal I’ve had for a while – it’s one of the reasons that I created the I Must Confess linkup. I wanted to encourage a sense of understanding and confidence and positivity on the blog. I hope building up support in this way will lead to a more engaged, supportive and vocal group of ‘Truthers’ around here.

3. Be a better commenter. I admit I’m not the most prolific commenter out there. I do have time constraints as I work four days a week and, like all of us, have commitments to the family as well. But I could use my free time far better than I do now and I would like to be able to comment on 5-10 blogs a day, everyday, not just on the days I linkup with bloghops/linkups.

4. Become a more organised blogger. I would like to be in a position to schedule posts more often, to be able to set aside time to devote more to Twitter and Facebook and to be able to deliver set posts on topics on set days. I want to be more organised so I can have regular time to write the big posts, the ones that take time to research and craft and refine – the posts that really matter.

5. Remember this is a hobby and just have fun. I have been considering whether to actively chase advertising and PR opportunities for the blog. I have enjoyed the giveaways I have run but it can be a lot of work and, I’ll be honest, quite stressful too. This is my hobby so I want to enjoy it and not worry about it becoming work. So while I’ll continue to accept opportunities that suit me I will not be actively chasing them.

What are your blogging goals for 2013? Do you have any, or are you just winging it?

Those are some great goals. I think you have made me think about those things you have written for my blog. Hope you have a wonderful new year.

Thanks Salz – I could have made many more but I think these are the ones I should concentrate on first. I hope you have a great year too, both personally and on the blog!

  2. Love your bloggy goals. I haven’t really thought about any blogging goals but I might have to I think. I’ll have a think about it and get back to you and link up with I Must Confess. My most clicked post for 2012 was my first (and only!) I Must Confess post so I definitely want to make the time to join in this year. I won’t be linking on Monday though as I have a post scheduled for Tuesday which will be my big 1000th so don’t want to throw out the numbers, but I will definitely do it later in the week, probably the Thursday. Hope that is cool?

Anyway, Happy New Year Kirsty, look forward to reading more in 2013!

Congratulations on 1000 posts Kylie – I do not want to mess with that milestone, that is an amazing achievement! I would love for you to join in with I Must Confess when you can. I’m also interested in writing something for you for your Confessions of a New Mum series too – I’ll email you with some ideas by the end of the week.

I didn’t make any blogging goals, but being more organised is certainly one of them. I’m hoping I will have more time when school starts back.

Happy unofficial? blogerversary. Big celebrations in March?

Thanks Sophie – I’m starting to see the benefits of celebrating all over again in March – it seems I’ll use any excuse for a celebration!

  7. Karen says:

Oh I really like your blogging goals! I agree small blogs can make an impact, you never know who might be reading it!! I might have to copy your goals for myself!! I feel like I am in the same place as you with deciding about next steps and PR and what not! Fun is definitely key!

    • Kirsty says:

Fun is definitely the key – if blogging becomes more like work than a hobby then it’s probably time to reevaluate why you’re doing it. And I’m glad I’m not the only one mulling over PR and advertising – it seems I’ve been mulling over it for years, still without any real resolution – maybe this year will finally be the year!

  8. Robomum says:

I just want to cut and paste all of those goals and put my name at the top of them! Happy New Year!

  9. Twitchy says:

Oh boy am I ever winging it. I love your goals, many are along the lines I’ve been considering too, but my problem with goals (such as commercialism) is I always seem to have an opposing mindset also- therefore I’m never in possession of a lovely set of clear aims. Oh well. Happy New 2013!

  10. I don’t have any yet, but I probably need to set some. I just need time to think about it!

Yep, I understand that Jess. My problem is that the more time I think about them, the more resolutions I come up with…!

Thanks Emily – not sure if I’m that popular or interesting but I’m finally getting a hang of it all now – only took 2 years and 300 posts…!!!

I’m looking forward to reading more from you too!

  12. Trish MLDB says:

They are great and achievable goals Kirsty.

    • Kirsty says:

I hope they are Trish. I think it’s impossible to set numbers based goals as how much control do you have over who reads and comments on the blog? How achievable can that be? I just want to maintain my steady growth, but more importantly, have the opportunity to make a difference, in some way, if I can…we’ll have to see how it all pans out!

  13. Francesca says:

Happy new year, Kirsty. The great thing about setting a few goals like you have is that you can always go back and remind yourself of what you’ve set your focus to be if it feels like things are running off course a bit during the year 🙂

That’s the plan Francesca. I know I need to set goals to have any chance of making progress – there’s nothing like public accountability, is there?
