Musical Musings – Worst of the 80’s

I saw this post on Facebook yesterday and was gobsmacked:

It states that on October 6 2011, Starship’s We Built This City was named the worst song of the 1980’s, followed by Europe’s The Final Countdown, Chris de Burgh’s Lady in Red and Wham!’s Wake Me Up (Before You Go Go).

I’m gobsmacked that these songs are considered so bad because I think they are awesome. Sure they are daggy now but they each epitomise what the 1980’s were all about.

There’s the mainstream rock of Starship – this song is my first ever favourite song – I even remember the filmclip! There’s the long-haired glam rock of Europe, the slow adult contemporary tones of Chris de Burgh, plus the pop perfection of Wham! That’s the 80’s right there, if you ask me!

By the way I’m also gobsmacked because clearly I have poor taste in music, according to the readers of Rolling Stone

Whatever, I’m going to play the so-called worst of the 1980’s today anyway – here’s to you, readers of Rolling Stone !

What were your favourite tunes of the 1980’s?

  1. Hi Kirsty,

Another website, circa 2004, crowned “We Built This City” the worst song ever and, while that song is a guilty pleasure for me, I saw their argument for why it’s so bad.

I do believe however that “Buffalo Girls” by Malcolm McLaren and “Shiny Shiny” by Hayzee Fantayzee, or anything touched by Pete Waterman (Kylie Minogue and Mel and Kim anyone?) are far worse.

Dave, I agree, there is far worse songs out there. In the end, it’s all subjective, so I’m cool with being a great big dag!

  2. I love We Built This City too, but I can’t stand Lady in Red. Probably because they played it on the radio all the time and I just got so over it.

I like We Built This City better than Lady in Red, but if I’m in the mood I do enjoy the slower song. And I could dance anytime to Wake Me Up Before You Go Go – seriously, how could that rate as one of the worst songs of the 80’s? Surely that Agadoo song (you know, Agadoo, doo, doo, get pineapple up the tree, etc) was a far worse song than any of these?
