Thankful for Opportunities

Today was a really positive day for me. To be honest, it was the most positive day I have had in a long time.

Reflecting on my day has made me thankful for the opportunities my family and I have been lucky enough to have this year.

It’s so easy to dwell on the hardships and the struggles but it’s not so easy to really appreciate the little things that make life good.

So this week I want to share my gratitude for a bunch of things that have contributed to my current positivity.

1. Thankful for the opportunity to mainstream.

This year started with the opportunity for Gilbert to join a mainstream class. There have been ups and downs and good days and bad days. He started off well but then had an unsettled week that culminated in a short suspension.

This was not an outcome we welcomed. But there has been an unexpected upside.

The weeks since have seen Gilbert grow in maturity. He was quite affected by the suspension and is trying to do the right thing. He is slowly but surely learning how to relate to others in his class. He has even made some friends which has just blown us away.

We are finally confident in our decision to challenge him in a mainstream class and so proud of how he has risen to the challenge himself. We are so very grateful that we seized the opportunity when it was presented to us.

2. Thankful for the opportunity to choose where we live.

I am thankful that we had the freedom to choose to move on from our current house. I’m even more thankful that we’ve been able to sell our house quickly so we can move to one that better suits our needs as a family.

I’m also grateful that my parents-in-law will house us for a few weeks while we are between houses. We will all probably be a lot less grateful by the end of our stay (!?) but their offer to help us out for a few weeks means that we can give our kids some much-needed certainty as to where we are headed next.

3. Thankful for the opportunity to try a new role.

Today I was offered a short-term opportunity to work at a higher classification. They are even happy for me to continue working my current hours which means I don’t have to decline a great development opportunity or worry about how I will sort out the kids each day. Bonus!

For a part-time worker, opportunities to work at a higher level are usually hard to come by, particularly if you work to restricted hours like I do. I am so very thankful for this rare opportunity to show what I can do and prove that I can be productive and valuable even if I am not in the office for 40 hours a week.

4. Thankful for the opportunity to go to DPCON12

I am grateful for the chance to attend DPCON12 in Melbourne next week. I’m thankful that my husband is happy for me to go and that my mother will be around to help with the kids.

I’m thankful for the opportunity to have some time to myself and re-discover me as a person. I’m looking forward to meeting with other bloggers, connecting with like-minded people, pushing past my comfort zone and taking the plunge into something completely different.

Opportunities, and having the courage and the belief to run with them, are definitely something to be thankful for!

Who would have thought something positive would have come out of a suspension? But it’s almost like we all had to go through it in order to come out the other side.

For the first time I truly think mainstream will work for him. I’m sure we’ll still have rough weeks but the school seem to be on board and seem to be happy with his progress so fingers crossed on that one.

I’m looking forward to meeting you too next week, as well as your mischievous little miss (she sounds a lot like my Delilah Bear…)
