The First Eight Days…

How to Blog

I wanted to share what I have done so far in the 31DBBB challenge so I can look back and actually see some progress and you can see what I have been banging on about so much lately!

Day 1 – Write an Elevator Pitch
The elevator pitch is designed to be a quick & succinct way of letting readers know what your blog is all about before they get into reading your posts.

This is the pitch that I wrote on Day 1:
Sharing my experiences in life, love, parenting, albinism, autism and my growing belief that the work/life balance is a mirage!

This the pitch that I have refined for inclusion on the blog:
I’m not crafty or arty or culinary but I do tell some home truths about being a working mother of 3 while staying (relatively) sane…

Can I say, this first challenge is HARD. Try it yourself and see what you come up with!

Day 2 – Write a List Post
Can you believe that I had never written a list post before this task? I normally just ramble along rather than getting the point of things so this was a great task for me to take on. I decided to write about 5 Things That Inspire Me as I aim to be inspired and to inspire others throughout the month of June. I’ve certainly been inspired by the many blogs I have read this month, but have I inspired anyone else yet? Let me know if I have inspired you in any way at all, would love to know!

Day 3 – Promote a Blog Post
This task was all about marketing and self-promotion, elements which do not come naturally to me.  I normally just promote my posts via Twitter and Facebook and Digital Parents Australia so on Day 3 I moved outside my comfort zone and took the plunge into other sites. So I joined Digg, StumbleUpon and BlogFrog, which are not at all scary and are quite fun. I have added Digg and StumbleUpon buttons to each post so feel free to share anything that takes your fancy!

Day 4 – Analyse a Top Blog in Your Niche
This was an interesting task – I could have picked so many blogs to analyze as there are so many out there that I look up to.  In the end I chose to analyze Three Lil Princesses which is a successful blog that has achieved a lot in the short time it has been in existence – in fact it is the same age as mine!

I have learned a lot by looking at how Kellie from Three Lil Princesses has successfully engaged her readers and garnered a loyal and growing audience. Kellie has a background in journalism and PR and has put these skills to great use – this is a fantastic blog and I will continue to study it as I try to grow my own readership.

Day 5 – Email a Blog Reader
This task was all about building engagement with your audience by responding personally to comments via email or via blog comments. I always take the time to reply to any comments I receive so I didn’t do too much with this one but I did ensure I visited a few more blogs that day and made the effort to leave more comments of my own.

Day 6 – 27 Must-Read Tips & Tutorials for Bloggers
This task literally blew my mind. Forgive my ignorance, but I had not heard of any of the bloggers we were required to research for this challenge so I was unaware of their popularity or the many ways you can apparently make heaps of money from your blog.

This made me think as I have been considering whether to go down the road of allowing advertising on the blog for a little while now. This task illustrated some of the pitfalls of going down that road. A post by Skelliwag, Creating Without Ulterior Motives, particularly caught my attention, discussing the early, uncomplicated days of blogging where content was king and there was less pressure to make money or write for others. Quite a thought provoking piece – I feel I will be mulling this one over for some time to come yet.

Day 7 – Write a Link Post
This was a great way to bring together all the reading I had done over the previous days as I decided to write a post, Sharing is Caring – 31DBBB Edition, that linked to the blogs of others completing the #31DBBB challenge. It was a great exercise for me as I was able to take the time to read each blog and provide a synopsis of what they were about – there are definitely some talented bloggers out there!

Day 8 – Interlink Your Old Posts
Which brings us to this post – my attempt to link to some of my earlier posts and to the SITSgirls website, hosts of the #31DBBB challenge. Apparently this will help my SEO (Search Engine Optimisation – fancy interweb speak for getting your posts noticed on search engines like Google). Maybe having intertwined links amongst my posts will get me more traffic,  but if it doesn’t, it won’t be the end of the world.  I’m still going to post my thoughts even if no-one reads them as I write as much for me as for you guys – but please accept my sincere thanks for taking the time to read this and any of my other posts, it is much appreciated!

Spread the positivity!

Hi Angela, yes, my plan is to summarize how I have gone each week…hoping it keeps my motivation up! I was finding it hard to keep up and some days I struggled to see my progress but when I put it down on paper it looked a lot better. I will be visiting your site too, thanks for introducing yourself!
